What is a Scent Priestess and the Art of Anointing?

For thousands of years before biblical times, in the great cultures of Sumer, Babylon, and Canaan, temples dedicated to the divine feminine were often the center of community life. These temples were run by women, priestesses, who served their communities, making welcome all who needed healing and shelter. In these self-sustaining temples, the women tilled the fertile lands growing not only food, but the plants, flowers, and herbs that would be used for healing and anointing. They would blend holy oils to be used in healing and in ceremony—oils that would lift the participants into deeper spiritual states while healing the body. Holy oils were used as medicine, and the priestesses that made and administered them were honored and respected as Scent Priestesses. Their oils were used in ceremonies for birthing, dying, grieving, fertility and the blessing of sacred unions. Holy oils were used to consecrate rites of passage, and times of celebration. In the heart of the cultures, tribes, and clans that honored the way of the Great Mother, the Scent Priestess was respected as a medicine woman and spiritual guide.

Scent Priestesses not only distilled their holy oils, but also created sacred practices to apply them to the body. Using spiritual healing techniques and the holy oils, Scent Priestesses knew how to balance the body, mind and spirit. Through various anointing techniques the priestess opened her senses to the eternal aspect of her being. Then, in direct experience with Grace, she offered anointing as a blessing, a healing, and a rite of passage. It was and still is a sacred practice of deep healing and consecration utilizing holy oils as a sacred seal, the covenant between the physical and the etheric; the Kiss of Spirit on the Body.

Throughout the ancient world anointing was used to help people awaken to the awareness of themselves as spiritual beings. The oils were used to help people deepen in the spiritual and healing arts.

The Emerald Temple anointing oils, classes and retreats are created in the tradition of the Scent Priestesses that have come before us. Those women who gathered in ceremony, opening to the wild, untamed frequencies of plants. The great medicine women who knew how to call forth the inherent wisdom of the plants they worked with, distilling their medicine into the oil blends they created.

Because essential oils are the life force of the plant and their chemical structure is similar to our cells and tissues, they have the ability to penetrate cell membranes and diffuse into blood and tissues. This is why they enter the body so quickly, bringing their medicinal qualities wherever needed. The oils are powerful anti-oxidants, and are anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, as well as powerful antiseptics. They help the immune system to stay strong, the nervous system to remain calm, and the mind to stay alert. The olfactory receptors that line our nostrils are activated by aromas and then send off messages to the limbic area of the brain, which controls memories and thoughts. In this way their scents keep the brain awake to courage, strength, compassion, and kindness. The sacred scents bathe the body and mind in the gorgeous awareness that we are spiritual beings having a human experience.

From a spiritual perspective essential oils are crystalline structures that carry all the frequencies of light that expands the auric field, thus giving them the name of “Treasured Ethereals”. The aroma of the oils is intended to align our consciousness with divine consciousness through prayer, meditation, or personal spiritual practice. The oil’s frequency creates a subtle knocking on the gateway of the divine inviting entrance to other realms of consciousness and reminding us that we are never alone; there is an eternal power we call love and it knows the way home.”

“Anointing is a tool for delivering grace and healing. When blended alchemically the essences merge in a sacred marriage of joy and delight.”

How To Anoint Yourself

'To anoint yourself and apply the essences, gently shake the bottle or put it between the palms of your hands and roll it back and forth between them. Close your eyes for a moment. Take a deep breath centering yourself, making connection with the frequencies and essence within the blend. Then open the bottle and hold it just beneath your nose inhaling it like a fine wine. Then allow a few precious drops to flow into your palm. Rub your palms together to release the essence and breathe in the aromas. Cup your hands together and raise them toward your nose, inhaling deeply.

Then slowly sweep your hands outward as if cupping the air in front of you drawing them back in toward your face, fanning the scent toward you. Then you may anoint the body with the oil. Wonderful places to anoint yourself are the wrists, the heart, throat and brow or third eye.

Be gentle with the body sending the strong intentions and messages of love and caring to your physical form, reassuring it, and directing healing. You may apply the oils to the wrists or the energy center associated with the blend.  Carry your favorite oil blend with you and anoint yourself frequently throughout the day, keeping your mind centered and clear as the oil strengthens the immune system and your overall sense of well being. Let the scent remind you... you are a spiritual being, eternal and made of love.
